AFTER THE ACCIDENT

Repairs and lost resale value.
Understand the difference.

Clear answers to help you prepare for a diminished value assessment.

What is diminished value after a car accident?

Diminished value is the loss in your car’s market value after an accident, even after repairs. Buyers may pay less for a vehicle with an accident history. The amount depends on the individual vehicle, its damage, repairs, and the market.

Insurance paid for my repairs. Can I still ask about diminished value?

Yes, you can ask whether the loss in resale value has been considered. Repair costs and diminished value describe different losses. A repair payment does not by itself establish that the lost resale value was paid. Whether a claim is recoverable depends on the facts, state rules, coverage, and any settlement you signed.

Can I claim diminished value if the accident wasn’t my fault?

Usually, yes. You may be able to seek compensation from the at-fault party’s insurer. Eligibility depends on your state, the facts of the accident, and applicable coverage. Payment is not automatic.

What if I caused the accident?

Do not assume your own policy covers diminished value. Review the policy and ask your insurer about its coverage and exclusions. Your state and the circumstances can also affect your options.

How is an appraisal different from an online car value estimate?

An online valuation can be a useful starting point. ValueBack Auto’s certified appraisers inspect your car in person to examine its individual condition, accident damage, and repairs and document the loss in market value.

What information should I prepare?

Start with your VIN, mileage, accident date and location, repair status, and insurance details. Repair estimates, final invoices, damage photos, and claim correspondence can support a later review.
